Amid hills at the head of Swaledale sits the small village of Keld, its cottages clustered around a tiny square. The hostel, formerly a shooting lodge, stands overlooking the village and is a welcome resting place for walkers and cyclists at the cross-over point of the Pennine Way and Coast-to-Coast path. A variety of walking is on offer, ranging from gentle riverside rambles to hikes over the open fells. Birdwatchers should keep a keen eye out for a glimpse of the rare black grouse.
